John Wayne a surveyor?

John Wayne a surveyor? No, but he played one in the 1949 movie The Fighting Kentuckian.

photo of John Wayne from the movie The Fighting KentuckianThings have changed a lot since then. Surveyors now have total stations, GPS and laser scanning. But when it comes to boundary lines, the basic guiding principals remain the same – “following in the footsteps of the original surveyor”.

How do you do that? You gather all the evidence – monuments, occupation lines, parol evidence, research deeds and study old plats and surveys. You follow case and statute law.

It requires time and as the old saying goes, time = money. Do you think the surveyor who tells you the lowest price is going to spend the time to do all of the above? Or will he simply measure over deed distance and set a monument?

You are doing yourself, your neighbors and all future property owners a disservice if you choose a surveyor based on the lowest price rather than experience and expertise.

Experience and expertise – WB Wells has done over 300,000 projects in the Portland metro area since 1924.
