map of north american with lines of latitudeLines of latitude and longitude divide the earth into a huge grid. The unit for this grid system is the degree.

Lines of latitude measure the distance from the equator to the north and south poles.

All lines of latitude are parallel to the equator.

Each degree of latitude represents about 69 miles on the surface of the earth.

The equator is latitude 0°. The north and south poles are latitude 90°.

On the long path to getting a license to survey, lines of latitude are just one of the subjects surveyors are tested on.
